Goals of the Workshop

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • have more knowledge about the Google Chrome browser
  • identify what Chrome apps and extensions can do
  • know where to locate and install Chrome apps/extensions
  • be able to manage apps and extensions they have downloaded
  • have familiarity with a variety of extensions that support literacy

The Chrome Browser

  • Chrome is a browser that is created by Google and runs on both Windows and Mac computer platforms
  • does not run the same on the iPad or on Android devices
  • retains your settings and webpages
  • unified browsing/searching experience
  • low maintenance
  • fast, secure, unique

Apps & Extensions

  • Chrome also acts as a launcher for various apps and extensions
    • an App is a specific program that runs inside of your browser
      • e.g. Google Docs, Drive, Calendar
      • an App may sometimes simply lead to a webpage
    • an extension allows for global changes on your browser
      • it enhances the functionality of the browsing experience

Preparatory Work

  • on your device(s):
  1. install Google Chrome
  2. Create a google account or log in if you already have one
  3. Select icon in top right hand corner and select settings
  4. On the left hand side, choose Extensions
  5. Scroll to the bottom and select “Get more extensions”

1. Go into settings.

3. Click “Get more extensions” to go to Chrome Store.
